Daffy Duck takes on a Hawley Pratt-designed dog as he tries to get a home for the winter in Cracked Quack (1952).
The duck distracts the dog by throwing a bone out the window. The dog chases after it and stops instantly, with gravity doing its work.
Multiple eyes when the dog realises it’s in mid-air.
A mad scramble to get back to the window. The dog sprouts extra feet. These are some of the frames, animated on ones.
Manny Perez, Ken Champin, Virgil Ross and Art Davis are the animators.
I'm thinking that Ken Champin animated this scene.
ReplyDeleteNah, I'm pretty sure that bit is by Art Davis.
DeleteOkay, how do I know who to trust when it comes to animator IDs? Not to pick on anybody here. Just that I've noticed quite an increase in the number of guys around the internet telling you who was responsible for this or that scene, and they don't always agree. How do I know who knows what he's talking about and who doesn't? I'm certainly no expert, myself. All I ever remember is that the chisel-tooted Bugs in a Chuck Jones cartoon is Ben Washam's.
ReplyDeleteRandy, I think the people to trust most are those who pay attention to how the character is drawn and animated. Like I instantly recognize Ben Washam because his drawings are confident and angular, and his characters always have crisp movement. In contrast, Ken Harris (who wasn't as good a draftsman as Washam) was often given more dialogue scenes, such as when Bugs styles Gossamer's hair in "Water Water Every Hare".
DeleteIt's very easy for people to pin down a single earmark and attach it to a name, such as Ken Muse drawing three tufts on Tom's chest, or Don Williams using multiples a lot. So really, I guess it's about familiarizing yourself with how other people draw/animate the best you can, and being able to deduce for yourself who is right and wrong. Animator drafts (what relatively few of them we have) are also helpful in this regard.
Oh, and this has nothing to do with animator IDs. Does anyone know what became of "J Lee," who used to frequent the comments section of this and other sites I read? He seems to have disappeared sometime last year.
ReplyDeleteApologies is this is an inappropriate question. Just curious to know what became of him
I haven't a clue, Randy, where JL has gotten to.
DeleteAbout the only IDs where I'm pretty positive is in the early HB stuff, mainly because one guy did a full cartoon and he's credited. (Mike Lah did uncredited work, but his characters don't look like anyone else's).
