What? Stan Freberg and Frank Nelson together?!
Among many things, Freberg was known for his extremely creative radio and TV commercials. Here are four. Nelson assists in the first pair.
A three-page article in the 2 December 1964 edition of Sponsor magazine confirms Billy May’s Orchestra is backing them, with help from Jud Conlon’s Singers. I think Bill Baldwin is the announcer in the third spot. I would love to know who the singer is in the second ad.
Cue in past 18 seconds of LP crackle.
Freberg got himself in hot water (ha ha) in the mid-Eighties with the not-yet-Artist-Formerly-Known-As because of a Prince Spaghetti TV ad that made sport of their similar monikers. [Cue Controversy]
ReplyDeleteI don't have a clue as to who the singer happened to be in the second commercial. I wouldn't think it was someone they pulled from an orchestra at random and said "here, sing this". Speaking of Frank Nelson, he appeared in a television commercial from Freberg for Zagnut.
ReplyDeleteSince the dialogue says "a famous singer," I'm sure that's who it is, some crooner from the '30s. He's very Rudy Vallee-esque, except with more resonance than Vallee.
