Disney's Groundhog Day

Is it Groundhog Day in the Wonderful World of Disney? Why, yes, at least in the 1930 cartoon Winter.

A groundhog shields his eyes as he emerges from his hole.

Hurray! No shadow!

The woodland creatures do a little dance. Uh, oh. The shadow appears.

The groundhog makes a break for his hole, leaving the shadow outside to bang on the door.

The shadow fades away just before the blizzard arrives.

The animals take shelter as the cartoon ends with a Disney butt-violation gag involving a porcupine.

This was the last of the four seasonal cartoons. Summer and Autumn were released earlier in the year and Springtime in 1929.

  1. I had forgotten this one! Those early Silly Symphonies are a delight. Interesting how the early Disneys appear to follow animation trends. The earliest ones remind me of the Fleischer cartoons and some of the Terrytoons. Within a few years, Disney would be setting new trends in animation and the other studios would be following his lead--or deliberately bucking the Disney pattern.

Thanks for this post! I can't think of a better way to observe Ground Hog's Day!
