Acme Bat-Man

Here’s why you should never stare at the camera while you’re in mid-air.

Was there ever a cartoon character more aware of his audience than Wile E. Coyote? Was there ever a cartoon where he didn’t stare at the camera at least once?

This is from Chuck Jones’ ‘Gee Whiz-z-z’ (with a few more z’s on the title card) with animation by Abe Levitow, Dick Thompson, Ken Harris and Ben Washam.

For the record, Wile E. is wearing “One Acme Bat-Man’s Outfit Reg. Size.” Bats, at least in some parts of the world in 1956, must have been green.

  1. Unripened fruit bat color?

It's interesting to me that while this cartoon was part of those done in the post 3-D reopening period, and show Jones' unit hadn't quite gotten back together again (Ernie Nordli gets layout credit here), Michael Maltese still gets story credit. Most of Chuck's other shorts of the time were either written by Tedd Pierce or Jones himself, so they must have really backlogged a ton of Road Runner gags, since if you just went by the RR credits you'd never know Maltese spent have a year away from the studio working for Walter Lantz.
