You can see how silent film stars influenced Chuck Jones. His work is brimming with great expressions.
Here’s an example in Gas, a 1944 Snafu cartoon for the Army/Navy Screen Magazine. Snafu is self-satisfied as he gets set to pull his gas mask out of his satchel. Only it isn’t a gas mask.
He tries again. Aha!
Another self-satisfied look.
Cut to a side angle. He pulls out a cameo appearance by Warner Bros. biggest cartoon star. You can guess what he says to Snafu.
Sarge isn’t happy. Snafu’s expression changes as he drops Bugs out of the cartoon.
I don’t know who did this scene, but Bobe Cannon’s work appears throughout the cartoon.
Bugs and bras are not mutually exclusive, as a certain scene in A Corny Concerto will attest.
ReplyDeleteGreat scene in " A Corny Concerto ".. The revealed bra, the scream, slapping Porky's face, then, of all things, dancing away in a Tutu. Poor Porky's expression like " What just happened!!!!??"
ReplyDeleteActually, that's not a sergeant having a slow burn as Snafu fumbles about; the star on his helmet and shoulders identifies himself as no less than a brigadier general. The sergeant's insignia that follows (the diamond inside the chevrons and rockers) indicates Snafu is being put through his paces by a 1st Sergeant, the second-highest enlisted rating as of 1944, second only to a master sergeant.
