A Popeye Conundrum

So Popeye punches a log and then Bluto in Axe Me Another (1934).....

.... the log splits into wood for a baby chair .....

... Bluto lands in it and starts crying like a baby ....

.... then Popeye and Olive feed Bluto spinach ...

... Wouldn’t this make Bluto super-strong so he could beat up the two of them and get his revenge?

Seymour Kneitel and Doc Crandall are the credited animators.

As anyone who has ever tried to feed a crying baby knows, more of the food ends up being worn than ingested. Although in at least three Popeye cartoons, Popeye feeds spinach to his foe so that he'll beat Popeye up, as Popeye hopes to win Olive's sympathy by appearing to be the weaker. Segar's Popeye often emerged from a heavy brawl disheveled but happy ("I never had so much fun in my life. Say, that swab can fight!"), so clearly he gets off on a little competition. Or maybe the point is simply that no amount of spinach will cause anyone to beat Popeye. It's not what you get, it's what you do with what you have--if you follow that.
