Cingalli Circle

Big-Hearted Bosko (March 1932) has an odd error toward the end, at least in the version in circulation.

The cartoon is fairly routine, with the first half taken up with Bosko and Bruno skating on a pond. They find a baby in a basket and take him home.

The second half shows Bosko and Bruno failing to stop the child from crying until the dog puts on a lamp shade as a hula skirt and starts wiggling. All three of them start swinging to Richard Whiting’s “Cingalli.”

For four frames, a circle flashes on the screen. What’s it supposed to be?

Oh, well. It doesn’t stop them from dancing. A roast duck makes a cameo appearance.

Friz Freleng and Ham Hamilton are the credited animators.

  1. I think it’s a cue mark Yowp. It’s mainly seen on film reels and isn’t really an “error” but more something that’s used to signal the ending of a reel. Wikipedia had a good explanation of it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cue_mark

Also boy, you REALLY are running out of things to say about these toons! Though I don’t blame you, I’d too be running out of material after 5000 or so posts.

    1. That's possible. I'm used to the marks having jagged edges, but your explanation makes sense.
I did find this odd, so I wrote about it. I do not have time to blog. I rarely watch cartoons. I have more pressing things in life. The posts you'll read were compiled months ago, including the ones banked into the new year, and some obits written long ago.

    2. Of course I never said that niche posts aren’t bad or that I didn’t know that you’d be retiring. I just found this post interesting because of HOW niche it is lol.
