Ptui

How many times was this pun on Spitz used in cartoons?

This version is from Friz Freleng’s Dog Daze (1937). There’s no story credit.

  1. Spitting was one of those late 1920s/early-to-mid-30s gags that abounded in cartoons. They for the most part died off by the 1940s (Avery's oil gusher/spittoon gag in 1942's "Crazy Cruise" being one of the last of the genre).

  2. Avery's "Lonesome Lenny" (1946) was one of the later uses of the gag.

    1. Still in use as late as 1958 in McKimson's spectacularly unfunny "Dog Tales" (by Charlie Dog, no less!).

The annoying Charlie Dog also repeated the "One Percent Spitz (PTUII!)" on Chuck Jones' "Once An Orphan", which found Charlie harassing farmer Porky Pig until his brain snapped at the end of the cartoon , and had him believing he was a dog, until the dog catcher picked him up to haul him away to the pound. What a jerk Charlie was in that one.

    1. Which probably made his two cartoons a little better given his comeuppance in those.

    2. RobGems, I enjoy Charlie, but he really made a monkey, er, mutt out of Porky (Jones really DID have a small elephant make a monkey out of a circus cat! That end gag is a classic into itself.IMHO
