Out Pops Woody

Woody Woodpecker belts out the public domain (i.e. “free”) song “The Old Grey Mare” as he drives along during the opening of “The Reckless Driver,” directed by Shamus Culhane. Woody pops out of various parts of his little car and gives gooney expressions (on twos). Here are a few of them.

Woody drives past the same mound and tree five times. Who said Hanna-Barbera TV cartoons were the first to have repeating backgrounds?

Grim Natwick and Les Kline have the on-screen animation credits. Thad Komorowski has identified the artist here as Paul J. Smith.
